About.com - Internet Guide

Posted by admin | Posted in Business, Communities, Internet | Posted on 15-11-2008

About.com

The Internet is filled with a great deal of useful information. Unfortunately, it also contains a number of websites that provide incorrect information or that exist solely as an attempt to strip money from those that are searching the Internet. Therefore, finding a valuable website that contains accurate and useful information can sometimes be a challenge.

About.com strives to help web surfers sort through the muck and find information, articles, and web sites that are beneficial. The site does this by employing hundreds of expert “Guides” that help steer site visitors in the right direction when researching specific topics. To date, the site has over 570 guides and new guides and new topics are being added on a regular basis.

The use of these expert guides combined with the massive amount of topics already covered by the site has earned the site well over 34 million visitors. It has also earned the site recognition as one of the top ten content sites on the Net.
More… About.com was started in 1996 and quickly gained user attention and respect. By combining elements of other popular content sites, such as AOL, MSN, CNET, and WebMD, the site was able to develop its own unique user-friendly formula. As a result, the site was purchased by The New York Times Company in March 2005, which is where the site remains today.

In order to provide site visitors with a meaningful and unique experience, About.com carefully screens those that will work as site Guides. Each of its Guides must meet certain criteria, including:

* Individual Expertise
* Supreme Dedication
* Highly Credentialed
* Rigorously Trained
* Award Winning

In essence, the site selects only the “cream of the crop” to work as one of its Guides. Each Guide must demonstrate their expertise in the subject area through their educational qualifications as well as their personal experiences and writing abilities. Since each Guide must demonstrate a supreme amount of dedication, only about 2% of those that begin the training process actually complete it.

Many of those employed as Guides with About.com are also nationally recognized experts in their fields or are nationally recognized authors. As a result, many of these Guides are sought online and off for their opinions and expertise in these areas. In addition, 20 of the guides on the site have been recognized by Forbes as “Best of Web,” with three being listed among the Forbes “Favorites.”

Each of those selected as potential Guides must also undergo a rigorous training program. Not only does this program help to hone their writing skills, it also teaches them how to hold the interest of their audience as well as how to maintain the content of their subject in the best manner possible.

As a result of this rigorous training and the dedication of the management and Guides on About.com, the site has received numerous accolades. It has also grown the point that it offers 1.5 million pieces of original content to its readers as well as 22 different channels. The site currently offers pieces spanning an amazing 57,000 different topics and more than 3,000 new pieces of information are added to the site every week.

The expertise of the Guides has also turned the About.com community into one that is well-trusted and looked toward when surfing the Internet for valuable and useful information. It is also ideal for businesses looking for a place on the Internet where they can surround their brand with relevant information that will help bring new visitors to their sites. As a result, it is a win-win formula for everyone involved with the site.

Facebook

Posted by admin | Posted in Communities, Entertainment | Posted on 14-11-2008

Are you looking for means to communicate with more and more people through the Internet? If that is so then there are few social networking websites that can cater to your needs and help you make friends through the Internet. One of such sites is known as Facebook. It was launched in second month of the year 2004.

In the starting days, the registration to Facebook was allowed to limited people only. Only students of Harvard College could be a member of this website. Gradually, it was extended to the students of Boston University, MIT, Ivy League and Boston College as well. But recently, the membership of this site has been opened up for everyone. So, now anyone from any strata of society can become a part of Facebook and enjoy the benefits.

The second best thing about Facebook is that it has a number of networks. These networks are according to the regions, schools, universities and workplaces. You can find out people easily through these categorized networks. You can also be a member of these networks and be an active participant in the things like polls and events going on these networks.

Also, you can make your own network once you become a member of Facebook. After making a network, you can invite people to join it. This network becomes visible on the site and the members can search for it. Hence, here on Facebook, you not only get chance to re-connect with your old school or college friends but you can always make new friends as well.

You can find people who have same interests like you, who live near-by your area or who have the same background. Each network has its own discussion board where you can discuss anything with the other members. Thus, it gives you a platform to share your thoughts and vies on different issues of life.

Another great aspect of Facebook is that you can turn on the privacy settings. This enables you to protect your photos and notes from being read by strangers. It doesn’t allow the strangers to intrude into your profile. Only your friends are able to visit your profile. However, you are free to visit others’ profiles.

Now, you might ask how to get started with this fun filled affair? Well, all you need to do is be a member of Facebook and you get the chance to upload your profile. Once you do that, you can add your photographs in that profile. And mind it that you can upload as many photos as you want. Afterwards you can also tag your friends and let them see your uploaded photographs.

More than that, you can also upload notes and your blogs! Isn’t that interesting? Imagine you can share your blogs with all your friends. This means that your friends do not need to visit your blog page to find out whether there is something new or not. They will be updated with Facebook only. So, in this way you can also see the updated photos and notes of your friends. This means you stay connected with your friends through the Facebook.

Review of Msn

Posted by admin | Posted in Business, Communities, Uncategorized | Posted on 24-10-2008

MSN.com is known to be an “all in one internet portal.” With that being said, it is one of the most visited websites in the world, day in and day out. If you are a basic internet user, there is a good chance that you are quite familiar with both the pros and cons of MSN.com. Of course, more advanced and tech savvy users also find this website to be helpful in many ways.

Design

Like any website, the first thing that a visitor is going to notice is the design. This is one area in which MSN.com thrives. Despite the fact that the homepage is a bit crowded, the design is aesthetically pleasing to say the least. At the top of the page, users have the ability to use the Live Search Engine to find what they are looking for.

Directly below the search engine box is links to popular MSN.com features such as Hotmail, Messenger, My MSN, and MSN Directory. These are the most popular links at MSN.com. In addition to these, users also have the ability to check out information on travel, autos, careers, games, horoscopes, money, music, shopping, sports, weather, and more.

Marketing

In the early days of MSN.com, marketing was important for the company. After all, they were yet to be established as a major internet player. Of course, those days are long gone. At this time, it appears that MSN.com relies more on word of mouth than anything else. With the ability to pick up traffic based on word of mouth, the website can increase its base without having to spend tons of money. Of course, MSN.com runs television spots that put the company and site in the public eye.

Content

Content is what makes the internet tick, and MSN.com is no slouch in this area. Unlike sites such as Google that concentrate more on the search side of things, MSN.com offers plenty of updated, quality content. On the front page alone, there are links to the hottest stories of the day. For ease of use, these links are broken down into sections including MSNBC News, FOX Sports, and Money.

All of the content that is added to MSN.com is accurate, of high quality, and geared towards the user. This works out well for anybody who is a news fanatic.

Stats

According to Alexa.com, MSN is the 5th most visited website in the world. With that being said, the majority of the people who visit MSN.com are doing so for the Hotmail service; this makes up 48 percent of visitors.Â

As you can see, MSN.com is no slouch when it comes to sheer traffic numbers, as well as the quality of content that it provides. But with that being said, the reach of the site has been on the decline as of late.

It will be interesting to see what happens to MSN.com if Microsoft ends up taking over Yahoo. It is safe to say that the website is in for some major changes, hopefully for the better, if this acquisition takes place.

All in all, MSN.com is a popular website, and for good reason. It offers a nice layout, quality information, and many other benefits that will suit the needs of most users.

Propeller!

Posted by admin | Posted in Communities, Internet, SEO | Posted on 06-10-2008

Propeller, one of the latest entrants to the social bookmarks, is fast gaining a name for itself in the cyberworld, with reason. This site is fast becoming one of the ‘must have’ for any Webmaster out there. The site is very neatly designed with all the latest additions being reflected neatly. All the posts in this website is clearly categorized and links up to the author site, with no issues whatsoever.

Propeller is a product of Netscape and is one of the few sites that provide viable ‘one way’ links to all the webmasters out there. From what I have seen so far, the only bug in the system has to be the submit page, for it sure could do with some rework. Half the time the summit page works and the other half, it does not. But other than that, it is quite easy to submit ones story/article with the link pointing to one’s site. There are quite a few tools available here at propeller that you can use to drive more traffic to your site.

Membership is of course free and one can start a network here from scratch, all that you would have to do is to join up with a few others as friends and start exchanging posts amongst yourselves. By doing so, you would have your own social network; it is that easy here at propeller. The next time you want to tinker with social bookmarks, think Propeller.
